If you want to go from an average player to an elite player, you can’t do what everyone else does. You need to set yourself apart.
There’s a simple way to do that but it’s not easy. To find out how to become elite, keep reading!
First, let’s get this out of the way. There is a talent lottery. No matter what I did, or how I trained, I was never going to be Messi.
That being said, very few athletes reach their potential, and great talent goes wasted all too often.
And lesser talents may turn out to be better players in the long run.
Players who only rely on natural talent will eventually hit a wall.
Many “average” athletes make it because they are willing to do what others won’t.
Too many athletes either don’t do the extra work they need to succeed or they do it, but they aren’t mentally engaged in their training, so it’s not helpful.
They go through the motions, cruise along on auto-pilot. They lolly gag (come on, you know the movie I mean)!
They cruise through their warm up, hitting some dynamic stretches without really thinking about what they are warming up and why.
They aren’t using this time to get ready for their training.
Maybe some foot skill work, toe taps, bells, L-behinds, but no mental engagement on the process of improvement, so it really doesn’t look any different than it did a couple of months ago.
But this is NOT how elite players train.
Even the warm ups have an air of intensity and focus.
Every time you train it’s an opportunity to get better. Elite players take advantage of that opportunity.
Average players go through the motions.
This time is a gift. Athletic careers are all too short.
If you’re not out there putting in the work, just know that someone else is and one day, you’ll compete against them, either on anther team in competition, or for a roster spot.
You can have less natural talent.
But never be out worked.
There is not a program or coach in the world that can help you if you don’t approach your training with the intensity, focus and determination that it needs.
